THE Nadi Women’s rugby team kicked off their Marama Cup campaign with a commanding 24-13 victory over Lautoka at Churchill Park yesterday.
Nadi came into the match with purpose and composure, showing strength in both attack and defence. Winger Michelle Seruvatu opened the scoring in the 12th minute, although the conversion attempt by flyhalf Kelera Tinanisala was unsuccessful.
With several national reps in their lineup, including Merelita Makata, Nadi continued to apply pressure. Aseri Galo crossed over for their second try before fullback Losana Kuribua slotted in the conversion to give the visitors a 12-0 lead at halftime.
The second half saw Nadi raise their intensity. Seruvatu scoring her double in the 51st minute, and Tinanisala added the extras to stretch the lead. Senikali Bori sealed the win with a fourth try, though the conversion went wide. Lautoka managed their 12 points through a penalty kick by Bulou Rokodinono, and a try each to winger Avolonia Lewaiwaca and Anabela Satala.
Nadi captain Luse Vakaloloma praised her side’s efforts and acknowledged the tough battle from the home side.
“We thank the Almighty for giving us the strength to conquer a very strong Lautoka side. It was a tough match, especially with it being the first round of the Marama Cup,” she said.
Vakaloloma urged her team to remain focused as they prepare for their next match.
“The message to the girls is simple work together as a team and focus on the little things we’ve been practising in training.”
Nadi will host Nasinu next and are determined to keep their winning momentum.
“We’re aiming for another win. Losing is not an option,” Vakaloloma added.
The Marama Cup continues next weekend with more action expected across the country.
