Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd has been facing many issues with aging infrastructure, congestion and limited space to expand operations and unwarranted delays of turnaround time of cargo deliveries.

This was highlighted by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during his address at the corporation’s dividend handover ceremony last week.

Mr Rabuka said Suva Port needed to complete key CAPEX projects to extend its life for 20 years and increase capacity while waiting for the new port.

“Therefore, the strategic initiatives currently underway at FPCL – the continued investment in infrastructure development, including the Wharf Rehabilitation projects in Suva and Lautoka, will improve the efficiencies of port operations including enhancing the capacity to handle larger cargo volumes,” he said.

“This year also saw the development works commencing at Lautoka Wharf to increase the handling capability as well as significant progress in the wharf rehabilitation works.

“The commissioning of a new pilot boat in Lautoka marked another operational milestone, further supporting safe and efficient marine operations.

“It is also noteworthy that FPCL has initiated the Lautoka Port Masterplan, which will guide infrastructure growth and capital projects in the coming years for Lautoka Wharf.”

The corporation is focused on modernising its subsidiary, Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries Ltd.

He said the corporation would undertake the Slipway Rehabilitation project.

The project will set a future where larger vessels from neighbouring countries will come to Suva for slipping and maintenance services.

He acknowledged the corporation’s focus on innovation and sustainability with its continued progress towards its Small Green Gateway vision, their adoption of digital systems and the development of a Green Port Master Plan.

“It is crucial that we continue to adapt, innovate and align our operations with global best practices, placing a strong emphasis on environmentally responsible development and operations.”

The corporation’s board chairman Isikeli Tuituku thanked the Prime Minister for his leadership and determination to upgrading Fiji’s aging infrastructure as a whole and the port in particular.

“Your unwavering support continues to inspire us to reach higher and serve Fiji with excellence,” Mr Tuituku said.

“Together, we must transform our ports to meet the demands of tomorrow — smarter, greener, more resilient, and competitive.”
