The Fiji Rugby Union has begun negotiations with the landowners of Lauwaki, Vuda for the acquirement of land for their proposed stadium.
The FRU board proposed to build a stadium at the Western Division, this was made known to their member unions at the annual general meeting at Novotel in Lami.
This project is part of a larger challenge, pointing at the lack of grounds faced by the Rugby House and its unions.
“The bigger part of it is there’s not enough grounds for us to hold our games so all of that is packaged into one so we are now looking at how we can better position or play our games on our own ground,” FRU Board chairman John Sanday stated.
“We are looking at one on this side of the island, the other one on the western side and maybe later we can have one up in the north.”
“The negotiations have already occurred with the landowning unit in Lauwaki, Vuda for the allocation of a block of land about 40 acres and that’s going very well. We are progressing on that. We have also identified a 100acres on the Eastern side of the island and we are also discussing that,” he added.
With discussion on going, the question lingers on how to finance this project.
“How do we structure it so that we can finance it and the business model that will run of that so that we can sustain the payment and repayment of all of these things,” he said.
The lack of grounds was one of the contributing factors that pushed the FRU to hold their major domestic competitions in August and September.
