Seven dialysis patients won’t have to worry about medical bills for the next couple of visits to the Kidney Specialists Hub in Sigatoka following timely assistance from the Canadian Empowerment Women’s Foundation.
Founder Andy Chand said the financial help provided to the Hub was made possible through donations from their members in British Columbia.
“We found out about the Kidney Hub in our research of places that we wanted to assist and we were interested because of the work they did to help Fijians in need of dialysis,” Mr Chand said.
“Dialysis is a very essential service because it allows people to live a normal life with ongoing treatment. But it can be expensive, so we decided to raise funds among our members and donate enough fees to cater for seven patients.”
Secretary Anita Reddy said the organisation supported vulnerable communities.
“We raise funds for disaster relief, education support and health and medical support as well,”Mr Reddy said.
“We’ve also provided some assistance to send relief to Ukraine. So, our assistance is quite widespread. We try our very best to help in places that need assistance.”
The group has donated to organisations such as the Canadian Red Cross Society, British Columbia Children’s Hospital, Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and the BC Cancer Foundation. The hospital is run by nephrologist Dr Amrish Krishnan who also provides telehealth services.
