The Opposition of Fiji has expressed its condolences following the passing of renowned Pacific music artist George “Fiji” Veikoso, who died earlier this week.
In an official statement, Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu praised Veikoso’s contributions to music and culture, describing him as a “towering figure in Pacific music” whose influence spanned generations.
“As we all join the nation in mourning the loss of George ‘Fiji’ Veikoso, we remember a towering figure in Pacific music whose voice uplifted generations,” Mr Seruiratu said.
“His songs spoke to love, faith, and resilience, reminding us of our identity and power as a people. George’s journey took him from our islands to the global stage, yet he never lost touch with home.”
He was widely recognised for blending traditional Fijian and Pacific sounds with contemporary genres, helping introduce Pacific music to a broader audience.
Mr Seruiratu acknowledged this in his tribute, calling Veikoso’s work a “passport for our culture” and commending the artist’s dedication to representing the Pacific.
“Even through illness, George never stopped singing. He showed us that talent is a gift, but service is a calling.”
The Opposition extended its “heartfelt condolences” to Veikoso’s family, fans, and fellow musicians, saying his legacy would live on through his music and the cultural pride he helped nurture.
Official details regarding Veikoso’s memorial arrangements have not yet been released.
