POLICE have seized more than $81million worth of drugs in the past three months, says Acting Commissioner of Police Aporosa Lutunauga.

Mr Lutunauga said nine tonnes of illicit drugs were confiscated between March and May this year.

“These nine tons have an estimated street value of $79million.

That’s $79million worth of illicit product that we prevented from entering the market,” he said.

He said the operations were conducted in four phases under the force’s tracking program.

“Most of the drugs seized were green drugs such as marijuana, which made up the bulk of the total.”

In addition, police intercepted 4.9kilograms of white drugs, valued at $2.4m.

“This is a common challenge across the country,” Mr Lutunauga said.

He emphasised the need for community involvement in the fight against drugs.

“The police cannot do it alone. We need your assistance — especially when dealing with drugs.”

While some investigations had led to the recovery of proceeds of crime, Mr Lutunauga said identifying those responsible remained a challenge.

“In most of the farms we’ve raided, we are unable to identify the owners.

“This is where we need your help.”
