A MARRIED man accused of raping his ex-wife last year has been convicted by the High Court in Suva.
The 25-year-old baker was found guilty of a count of rape committed on February 10 last year.
Court records show the 20-year-old victim was married to the accused in 2022. They divorced in January this year.
On the day of the offence, the victim was at her family’s home when the accused came drunk. He instructed her to follow him to a mango tree away from the house where he had forceful unconsented sexual intercourse with her.
In his judgment, Justice Pita Bulamainaivalu found the victim was a credible, reliable and truthful witness, and that her demeanour while testifying enhanced the credibility and reliability of her account.
He found the prosecution, led by lawyer Joshua Singh, proved beyond reasonable doubt the accused was guilty of rape.
The man’s bail conditions have been revoked and he has been further remanded in custody.
The case has been adjourned to August 1.
