The Health Ministry is working to fi x a shortage of specialists in critical areas like endoscopy, with a focus on long-term capacity building, says Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu.
Speaking during the Family Planning and Commitment Policy launch in Suva, he said renovation work at key surgical theatres was also progressing.
“There are certain fi elds within the Ministry of Health that we do not have a good number of professionals serving in them.
And as such, it is about building capacity,” Dr Lalabalavu said.
“We have a specialised doctor and other trainee registrars who work under him.
“It is about building capacity in the various fi elds where we have shortages.
“So, the plan is in the future that we have a good number of specialists in those areas.”
He acknowledged support from international partners.
“Australia and New Zealand want a standalone unit for endoscopic services.
“We will definitely consider, bearing in mind the service that it will bring.
But at the moment, we are faced with theatre space.”
Renovations of four theatres at CWM Hospital are expected to wrap up soon.
“We will be completing the renovation of four theatres probably in the next month or so. And until then, the visiting teams will be prioritised accordingly.
“As such, it is left to the surgeons and the medical superintendent on how they prioritise cases.”
