FIJI’S recidivism rate has dropped to one of its lowest at 1.68 per cent, marking a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to rehabilitate and reintegrate former offenders into society.
This was revealed by acting commissioner of Corrections Sevuloni Naucukidi during the Yellow Ribbon Project Walk that was held in Nausori yesterday.
“As I speak, today our recidivism rate stands at 1.68 per cent,” Mr Naucukidi said.
“These are the reoffenders, or former offenders who get back into our care, or into the system.
“This translates into 42 inmates.”
Recidivism rate refers to the tendency for a former inmate to re-offend.
“But I believe with the ongoing effort, we can do much more.
“This has changed over the years, because now as a nation, we are beginning to understand the implications of helping in the reintegration of our ex-offenders, back into our communities, back into our families, back into societies.”
Mr Naucukidi said the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-offenders into society required a whole-of-nation approach.
