MINISTER for Policing Ioane Naivalurua has warned members of the Fiji Police Force there is “no place for unethical behaviour” in the ranks.
He told Parliament that while Fiji continues to strengthen its police operations through strategic investments, including the newly-launched Counter Narcotics Bureau, the force is not immune to internal misconduct.
“The police are not immune to internal challenges,” he said.
“There are those that cross the line, and let me make this absolutely clear this morning: there is no place in the force for unethical behaviour.”
Mr Naivalurua said ongoing cases involving officers from the newly-established Counter Narcotics Bureau should serve as a “necessary lesson” to all officers.
“There are ongoing court cases involving some offices of the Counter Narcotics Bureau.
“This instance, while deeply disappointing, serves as necessary lessons. Let them be turning points, not just for the individuals involved, but for the institution as a whole.”
Mr Naivalurua emphasised discipline and integrity must form the backbone of all police operations.
“While we speak of bold reforms and visionary strategies, I must pause to reflect on the internal discipline and integrity that must underpin everything we do.
“We cannot afford to behave like an unprofessional organisation. The trust of our people is hard earned and easily lost.”
Mr Naivalurua acknowledged the $13.5million budget increase in allocation to accommodate the recruitment phase of one of the force’s reform and restructure plans, which involves the recruitment of 530 new officers.
He also acknowledged an additional $8.6m allocated for salary progression of serving officers.
