Fiji Amateur Boxing team is heading to Brisbane for the Australian Golden Gloves competition, with a total of 10 boxers eager to showcase their skills on an international level.
The team’s head coach, Cam Todd, expressed confidence in their preparation, following a successful performance at the Tri-Nations Boxing competition in Suva.
“The preparations went well for the team, after the Tri-Nations Boxing competition, which was held in Suva, the team got straight into their prep, now the team is ready for the competition,” said Todd.
According to Todd, the focus for amateur boxing in Fiji is on nurturing and developing junior and youth boxers, providing them with opportunities to compete internationally.
“The main aim at the moment for amateur boxing is to continue to develop our Junior and youth boxers and be exposed to international competition which helps develop our sport as a whole.
“The young boxers that I’m looking at now are the ones which we will be looking at for future international events like commonwealth Games Pacific games and Olympics etc, so they need to have a long and strong amateur pathway so they can succeed when they get to these big events overseas.”
Next on the team’s itinerary is the Men’s and Women’s World Championships in England in September.
Leading the team is captain Aminiasi Saratibau, with talented boxers like Sakiusa Narara, Elijah Qiokata, Semi Koroi, Mitieli Navuasese, Iokimi Navuasese, Geoffrey Titifanua, Norman Amram, Anaseini Naikanivatu, Violet Baleinagasau.
The competition will be held from Tuesday to Saturday.
