The High Court has refused bail for a 35-year-old accused of causing the death of his partner’s one-year-old son.

Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull denied bail for Sairusi Ceinaturaga in Suva yesterday.

During the hearing, Mr Ceinaturaga said he sought bail based on his fear of HIV being present at the remand centre, and his desire to visit his daughters who are being taken care of by their grandfather.

He faces a count of assault and murder, which he allegedly committed at Vunidawa settlement in Cunningham on October 17 last year.

He had pleaded guilty earlier this year to slapping his 27-year-old de facto partner while she was preparing a meal. He has, however, denied hitting his partner’s son with a spoon and hitting his face against a wall before throwing him down on a mattress.

State prosecutor Unal Lal argued that granting bail would likely lead to interference with his vulnerable partner and three-year- old child.

Mr Lal said Mr Ceinaturaga’s issue with the remand centre could be argued via a constitutional redress application.

Justice Bull will deliver her written reasons for refusing bail, tomorrow.
