The Land Transport Authority has stressed that public service vehicle drivers transporting tourists must treat their passengers with respect.
This advice from its chief executive officer Irimaia Rokowasa is in response to a video circulated online last week regarding a tourist’s concerns about a taxidriver overcharging her $50 for a trip from Denarau to Nadi Airport.
The tourist briefly details how the driver then verbally abused her when she opted to travel in another taxi.
Mr Rokosawa said all taxidrivers in Fiji, including those servicing Denarau, are required to comply with the LTA Code of Conduct.
“This includes obligations related to driver behavior, customer service standards, vehicle condition, and adherence to transport regulations,” he said.
“The LTA maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct or ill treatment of passengers, including tourists. Drivers are expected to act professionally, courteously, and in a manner that upholds the reputation of Fiji’s transport and tourism sectors.”
Mr Rokosawa said any verified report of abuse, overcharging, discrimination or inappropriate behaviour is taken seriously and may result in penalties.
He said failure to comply can result in penalties such as issuance of Traffic Infringement Notices (TINs).
He said this can also allow for the suspension or cancellation of the driver’s PSV licence, disciplinary hearings or referral to the CEO or the LTA board.
“In severe cases, legal prosecution, taxi bases and associations may also impose their own additional conduct requirements, in coordination with LTA regulations.”
Mr Rokosawa said the LTA would be investigating this matter.
“Any issues related to driver misconduct, especially involving tourists in high-profile areas like Denarau, will be prioritised.
“Members of the public are encouraged to report incidents with as much detail as possible, including vehicle registration numbers, date/time and nature of the complaint, to enable prompt action.”
