Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara has officially assumed the title of Tui Nayau, restoring a seat of chiefly authority left vacant for two decades following the death of his father in 2004.
The installation took place in Narocivo Village on Nayau Island in Lau, marking the beginning of a series of traditional leadership ceremonies that will continue in Tubou Village on Lakeba, including the conferral of Tui Lau and Sau ni Vanua o Lau. The occasion featured sacred customs, including the Sili Vakaturaga, a chiefly sea bathing ritual at Tobu wei bui Seleima, and a solemn kava ceremony to confirm his installation.
Dignitaries from across Fiji including chiefs from Macuata, Rewa and Namosi, and senior government officials were present to witness the event.
Notably, Rewa’s participation signified the connection to Ratu Tevita’s maternal heritage.
The restoration of the Tui Nayau title has been widely celebrated as a powerful cultural moment and a unifying symbol for the Lau Group.
