Areas in the Northern Division which have electricity supply will be prioritised for the construction of the new morgue, according to Health Minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu.
Dr Lalabalavu said the morgues required a specific electrical capacity to operate essential equipment.
“Morgues need reliable electricity to function properly,” he said.
“This is why areas with electricity supply will be prioritised for the new morgues.”
The minister said these morgues may be built in Naweni, Cakaudrove and Nakorowaga, Bua.
“These projects are still in the planning stages and have yet to be finalised.”
As part of the 2025-2026 budget allocation, Dr Lalabalavu said funds had been set aside for the construction of these morgues, not only in the Northern Division, but across Fiji.
“These new facilities are essential for improving local healthcare infrastructure, and electricity availability is a key factor in determining where they will be located,” he said.
Dr Lalabalavu said the construction of these morgues was seen as a vital step in meeting the growing demand for such services across Fiji.
