HUNDREDS of devotees participated in the Shri Jagannath Rath Yatra in Suva yesterday.

Ram Chandra Dass, 70, from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Nausori, said they had started their march from the Suva bus stand to Albert Park to commemorate the weeklong festival of chariots, a celebration in which worshippers of Lord Jagannath draw his chariot to gain his blessing.

“We pulled the chariot with the ropes tied to it from the bus stand to Albert Park,” Mr Dass said.

“The ropes signify the devotees pulling Jaganath back to his home, which is Vrindavan.

“About 300 people came together, some even travelled from overseas to participate.”

He said sweets, food, magazines and books were also distributed to the devotees and to the public.

“This is just to shed some light on what this special celebration is all about and what it means to us.”
