The Fiji Hockey Federation says that several important hockey competitions planned for the coming months will help promote local players and give national team selectors a great chance to find new talent for future international games.

Federation president Emi Nawaqakuta said that one of the key events on the hockey calendar is the Marist Hockey Memorial Tournament (MHMT), which brings together top teams and players from around the country.

“The upcoming major domestic competitions such as the Marist Hockey Memorial Tournament provide an opportunity for local talents to be showcased and a chance for national selectors to identify potential representatives for any future internationals,” Nawaqakuta said.

Nawaqakuta explained that district and school-level tournaments are also very important because they help young and upcoming players improve their skills and grow their love for the sport from an early stage.

“District and school tournaments also help with consistent development and growth of the sport at various levels of competitions.”

In addition to local tournaments, the Federation is also planning for international competitions this year.

These international matches allow players to test themselves against tougher teams and gain valuable experience.

“International tournaments provide the much-needed exposure and opportunity for strengthening the current capabilities of the elite players in addition to their regular domestic competitions,” Nawaqakuta said.

Meanwhile the venue and date of the MHMT is yet to be confirmed.
