Suva Primary School (SPS) has shown that size does not limit success.
With fewer players and less training space than many larger schools, SPS has made history by winning the Suva Kaji Rugby under-14 rugby title for the third year in a row, a first for the school.
In a statement released yesterday, SPS rugby coordinator Maisese Niumataiwalu said, “This remarkable accomplishment not only highlights the talent within the school but also the dedication, resilience and discipline of our young athletes.”
The U14 team’s triumph was matched by the under-12 side, which also stayed unbeaten for the third consecutive year.
“The boys defeated several prominent schools such as Stella Maris, St. Agnes, and Gospel Primary School, showcasing the growing strength and potential of SPS rugby across multiple age grades,” Niumataiwalu said.
Even the younger grades are rising.
The U10 and U11 teams recorded promising wins and are improving every week.
“Their performances show that SPS is building strong foundations for the future,” she added.
Inspired by their older schoolmates, many under-9 boys have started playing rugby for the first time.
Niumataiwalu said, “It is wonderful to see our youngest students pick up a ball and want to be part of the team. Early development is key, and we are committed to supporting them.”
A special Thanksgiving celebration was held on Monday June 30 to honor all the teams.
Parents prepared food, teachers joined the event, and the head of school congratulated the players.
“Our parents who have a good background in rugby have contributed so much,” Niumataiwalu said.
“Despite limited resources, our teams have shown that a strong spirit and community support can achieve great things,” she said.
“Together, we are building champions, on the field and in life.”
