Luveni: Women must not be left behind

Update: 2:00PM WOMEN must not be left behind in the development process and laws and policies must ensure this.

This was a
call to Members of Parliament today by the Speaker of the House, Dr Jiko
Luveni.

She
reminded the members of the 2007 census that saw Fiji’s population in the 15 to
29 year old age group to be around 230,000 but decreased by 167,000 when it
reached the 60 and above age group.

She added
in the 15-19 year olds, 120,000 were men and 114,000 were women.

“Men
outnumbers women by 6000, however, when we reach 60 years old and over, there were
30,000 men and 33,000 women. Women outnumbered men by about 3000; honourable
members, laws and policies must ensure that women are not left behind in the
development process,” Dr Luveni said.
