Undefeated light welterweight professional Freddie Wisco travelled to his home island for a home fight, an article published in The Fiji Times on February 12, 1983 said.
The article said Wisco was on board the Gurawa with his father, heading for Kavala Bay to complete his preparation for his fight against Amania Dakai of Salvation Army.
The Nakasaleka villager was returning home after four years — this time to know his crowd and what he had learnt of the art.
Wisco was scheduled to fight Dakai in the main supporting bout of the Samu Matanisaga-organised program in aid of the Kadavu District School.
Wisco said he had watched Dakai beat Ambika Prasad at the National Gymnasium.
“I’ve got ways to handle him,” he said and hoped the fight went the distance.
“This is the first time, I will be appearing in front of my home crowd, it is something big and I would also like to keep my record intact.
Wisco had won all his 10 fights.
Apart from the reunion trip, Wisco also trained a few selected relatives from his village to appear in the preliminary bouts.
He had done part of his training at the Marciano Boxing Club and finished his preparation with Luke Ravuga, Samisoni Rayawa and Vilikesa Bole at Nakasaleka.
Organiser Samu Matanisiga said the program had been approved by the Professional Boxing and Wrestling Association.
