People on social protection programs have increased in numbers, says Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran.

She told a political gathering earlier this month that a lot had been said about social protection, “whether we have enough people or whether we are deducting people’s social protection”.

“We are not,” Ms Kiran said.

“Since we spoke here two years ago, the number of people on social protection has gone up.

“I remember talking about 96,000 two years ago, there are about 107,000 now.

“We serve more than 56,000 people who are senior citizens on social pension scheme.

“About 12,000 people on care and protection scheme.

“More than 24,000 people are benefitting from the family assistance scheme.

“About 14,000 people receive disability allowance and about 1000 people with disabilities receive transportation allowance.

“So, you will see that we are trying to serve.”
