A RETIRED couple from Nadera, Nasinu has lost their home and belongings valued at over $250,000 after a fire destroyed their property on Saturday night.
Arti and Vineshwar, who had stepped out for the night to visit a relative and drink grog, returned to find their home reduced to ashes.
“We were out all night, and during that time, the power went off, not just for our house but for the neighbours as well,” said Vineshwar.
“While we were away, neighbours said they saw a few boys walking around our compound, but it was dark so they couldn’t see properly.”
He said that shortly after, the house was seen engulfed in flames.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but Vineshwar, who works part-time as an electrician, suspects it might have to do with those suspected thieves.
“I recently redid all the electrical wiring myself. I doubt it was an electrical fault,” he said.
“We lost everything, clothes, furniture, tools. I use those tools for small jobs to support us since we are both retired.”
The couple is now uncertain about where they will stay or how they will recover from the loss.
“We don’t know what to do next.
“If anyone in the public is able to help in any way, we would be very grateful.”
Those wishing to assist can contact Arti and Vineshwar on 9919227 or their daughter Vinita on 8645679.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
