A GROUP of Korean volunteers hosted a nutrition event at the Nasikawa Vision College in Nadroga last week with the students learning about eating healthy fresh local foods.
The four-day Tiko Bula Bula nutrition workshop saw students trying out local products with the Kana Vinaka book author Colin Chung.
The volunteers are initiating a healthy eating and nutrition education project for the school.
Project co-ordinator Subin Lim said its purpose was to empower adolescents with the knowledge and skills to manage their physical health effectively.
“In particular, I hope students take away one key message: ‘You are what you eat’,” she said.
“Through this volunteering project, our team expects the following outcomes.
l First, enhanced ability to manage physical health, leading to sustained healthy habits;
l Second, emotional stability maintained through artistic activities; and
l Third, positive impact on the collective community through experiences of cooperation and mutual support
“Our project is titled ‘Nasikawa Vision College Students Health and Health Awareness Promotion’ based on the World Health Organization definition of health, which contributes to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 and 4,” Ms Lim said.
“According to the WHO, health is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.
“For our Healthy Eating & Nutrition Education lessons, our team sourced most of the ingredients from the Sigatoka market and local supermarkets, supporting both freshness and the local economy.”
Ms Lim said 152 students, in Years 9 and 10 participated in the volunteer activities.
“Personally, my greatest hope for this project is to help Fijians be more healthy and happier.
“That’s where my passion lies—and seeing their well-being improve is what brings me the most happiness.”
