THE Counter Narcotics Bureau and its officers are under investigation.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed this following a meeting with Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua and his permanent secretary Berenado Daveta in Suva on Thursday.

Commissioner Tudravu said the operations of the bureau was also being reviewed.

The investigation and review comes in light of two members of the bureau who were charged in relation to the discovery of more than 4.8 kilograms of methamphetamine at the Nadi International Airport earlier this month.

“We had discussed in a meeting yesterday with myself, the minister and our new PS and the minister has directed that there be an urgent and immediate review and an internal investigation in regards to what transpired especially on this Counter Narcotics Bureau team,” Mr Tudravu said.

He said the ministry would also be putting together a new structure for the Bureau and readvertising each post under the unit.

“They are still under the Fiji Police and were on secondment to the ministry.

“The way things are right now, our new PS will quickly set up a structure for them and we have agreed that we will need to advertise their positions once they are established and people will need to apply and they will be vetted properly.

“That means that all those that are on secondment with the Naroctics Bureau will need to come back to the Fiji Police Force and they have to apply together with other police officers.”

Mr Tudravu reiterated his concerns over the involvement of two officers from the bureau in the recent major drug case in Nadi.

“We were all concerned, the Minister, the PS and I, about what has transpired.

“They are still under the ministry but once the structure is in place and all of the administrative that is done with it to set up the unit are done then we will advertise the positions.”
