As the sun set over Churchill Park last Saturday, Swire Shipping Fijian Drua centre Iosefo Masi stood quietly, soaking in the electric atmosphere for the last time in a Drua jersey on home soil.
“First of all, I want to thank the Almighty God.
“It was a tough season for me this year, but He never left my side,” he emotionally said.
Masi, who hails from Waitabu Village in Taveuni, is preparing to embark on a new rugby journey with Lyon Rugby Club in France next season. But before his departure, he delivered a powerful performance for the Drua, scored a try in what was his final home game a fitting farewell for one of the team’s most beloved players.
“That moment playing my last home game and scoring, it was special. Something I’ll never forget,” he said with a smile.
Despite the joy on the field, Masi admitted that this year tested him in ways he hadn’t expected.
“I faced a lot of challenges,” he shared.
“There were times I questioned myself, but I thank God for guiding me through and I’m really grateful to the team management for believing in me.”
When asked what lessons he’d carry with him, Masi paused thoughtfully.
“I think for me, I just must face the challenge head on, not run away from it. Learn from it and move forward.”
That resolve to rise, learn, and grow is what has endeared Masi to Fijian rugby fans. From his humble beginnings to the bright lights of Super Rugby Pacific and now onto Europe, Masi carries not just talent, but a spirit deeply rooted in faith, humility, and perseverance.
