Swire Shipping Fijian Drua halfback Phillip Baselala is on track to don the FIJI Water Flying Fijians jersey later this year, following his instrumental performance in the team’s 38-7 final home game win over the Western Force in Lautoka on Saturday.
The 20-year-old was praised not only by fans but also by Drua head coach Glen Jackson.
“Young Phillip was outstanding. He’s a young man we’ve always believed to be a talented player.
“But at just 20 years old, it’s tough when the only rugby he gets is through Super Rugby and training with us.
“I was super stoked for that boy. I’m probably a little harder on him than others, but that’s because I know he’s going to be a quality rugby player for a long time,” Jackson said.
Following the match, Baselala credited God and drew inspiration from his favorite Bible verse, John 13:7 — “You may not know now, but later you will understand.”
“I just stick to the game plans. My focus is to deliver the ball to the forwards and support them on the field that kept me going,” Baselala said.
Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne, who is finalizing his squad for the July Test Series, has Baselala in his sights, especially with first-choice halfback Frank Lomani currently injured.
“Most of our halfbacks play for the Drua, and we’re keen to see Philip Baselala get some game time.
“We’ve been monitoring his progress, and given the current situation with our halfbacks, this could be his opportunity to earn selection,” Byrne said.
Byrne also confirmed that his coaching staff is working closely with the Drua team to further develop Baselala’s game.
The Solotavui, Nakasaleka in Kadavu native was overwhelmed when asked about Byrne’s comments.
“I’m speechless, but if I get the opportunity, I won’t let it slip,” Baselala said.
The Flying Fijians face the Wallabies on July 6 in Newcastle and will host Scotland on July 12 at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
The July Test Series kicks off a packed international calendar, which continues with the Pacific Nations Cup in August and September, followed by the Autumn Tests in November.
