Ministry of Employment acting permanent secretary Atish Kumar says the ministry is updating OHS policies to address challenges posed by digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI).

He told the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in Suva recently that with the assistance of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Fiji had developed its first National OHS Policy to manage emerging risks and ensure a safe working environment amid new technologies.

“As we embrace Al and digitalisation, prioritising worker safety and health is crucial,” Mr Kumar said.

“By collaborating across sectors, we can leverage technology’s benefits while minimising risks.

“Let’s ensure no worker in Fiji is left behind. Let’s work together to build a safe and healthy Fiji for all.”

Mr Kumar said the International Labour Organization (ILO) recognised April 28 to highlight critical issues in Occupational Health and Safety, focusing this year on the impacts of digitalisation and Al on workplace safety and health.

“The ILO reports more than 2.78 million work-related deaths annually, highlighting the urgent need to enhance workplace safety.

“As technology advances, prioritising worker safety is crucial to ensure the human element is not overlooked.

“The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially Goal 8, emphasises the importance of safe and healthy work environments for all.”
