Roberts heads Fiji mission

SENIOR career officer Peter Roberts is Australia’s new High Commissioner to Fiji.

The former deputy head of mission for Australia in Tokyo had presented his credentials to President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavuat the State House and also paid an introductory call on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka last month.

Mr Roberts is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

He has previously served overseas as Australia’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste.

He has also had postings in Australian diplomatic missions in Samoa and Japan, and also served as senior civilian monitor in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

Mr Roberts has a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Asian Studies (Hons) from the Australia National University (ANU).

At the meeting with Mr Rabuka, the two leaders discussed Australia and Fiji’s deep and enduring relationship, underpinned by their renewed and elevated Vuvale Partnership, and built on mutual trust and respect, and our common interest in ensuring a peaceful, prosperous, and resilient Pacific region.

Mr Rabuka welcomed and congratulated Mr Roberts as he assumes his new diplomatic role in Fiji and remains optimistic that the Vuvale Partnership will continue to elevate further, during High Commissioner Roberts’ tenure in Fiji.

Mr Roberts replaces Ewen McDonald who was Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji between 2023 and March this year.
