Instilling values in children is becoming increasingly difficult for mothers today.

Speaking to The Fiji Times after a Mother’s Day service at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva, women’s fellowship member Ani Naivalu said the occasion served as a reminder of the vital role women played within both the home and the wider community.

“On the Methodist calendar, today (yesterday) is dedicated to celebrating the lives of mothers,” Mrs Naivalu said.

“It’s a time to reflect not only on their domestic responsibilities, but also their broader role in society.”

She said while mothers have traditionally been seen as providers at home, their duties have extended well beyond that.

“They also have responsibilities outside the family.

“The church wants to recognise that our roles are not something to be looked down on, but are essential to the wellbeing of families.”

Mrs Naivalu highlighted the increasing difficulties faced by mothers today, particularly when it comes to guiding children in a rapidly changing social environment.

“Nowadays, we have so many challenges happening around us.

“One of the biggest problems is mobile phones. Children prefer to do things outside the family. We’re also facing issues like drugs, which makes it even harder to teach children the real meaning of family.”

Despite these challenges, Mrs Naivalu expressed hope that mothers could continue to lead their families with strength and faith.

“I believe that through Jesus Christ, mothers can be very powerful in overseeing their families and keeping their kids on the right path.”

Mother’s Day is observed annually on the second Sunday of May by the Methodist Church.
