THE passing away of Fiji sevens Olympics silver medallist and French Top 14 player Josaia Raisuqe has compelled France’s National Rugby League to pay tribute to the late winger at all Top 14 and second-tier matches this weekend.
Raisuqe played for Castres Olympique and died on Thursday in an accident where a train had struck the car he was driving in Saix, France. In a statement by the league, they expressed sadness at the loss and today’s Top 14 match between Castres and Clermont Auvergne has been postponed.
News of his passing has sent shockwaves throughout the sport in local, regional and international circles.
His death has been heavily documented in local and overseas media and it is a loss that has touched those who played alongside him at all levels.
Meanwhile, Raisuqe’s parents, Tevita Raisuqe and Mereani Wesivalu, were distraught when interviewed by the media yesterday.
They reflected on the qualities he embodied and the essence of service and community he had for his family and the vanua.
Former Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan took to social media to lament his passing and reflected on his early days as a part of the national side.
“Such sad news to hear of the sudden death of Josaia Raisuqe. I picked him for his Fiji 7s debut in 2015 after shining for Tokatoka Westfield under the tutelage of Epeli Lagiloa,” Ryan recalled.
“Hong Kong was his first tournament, and he shone in a side that picked up the title, full of energy, full of laughter.”
In a post on Facebook, Flying Fijian Waisea Nayacalevu shared photos with the late player and said there was nothing he could do to bring him back.
French-based Fijian player Christa Powell, reflected on their journey through the sport together.
“Only you and I know the struggles and the good times we had together my brother and even when we left each other, we always kept the love between us,” Powell lamented.
“I miss you my brother, I have so many questions.”
Raisuqe was 30 years old at the time of his passing.
