AGE is not a restriction in the pursuit of one’s dreams.
This rings true for Gauri Devi Raj who believes that with power, dedication and conviction you can accomplish your goals in life.
Ms Raj is the role model of her community in Nakama, outside Labasa town.
On April 15, the 50-year-old graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in counselling from the Fiji National University.
“I grew up in a rural farming community where I was raised alongside my three sisters,” she said.
“Our family life was deeply intertwined with agricultural practices; we contributed to the farm’s daily operations.
“In a household without brothers, I often assisted my father with various tasks, including working on the sugarcane and rice fields on the weekends and grazing our cows daily after school.”
Ms Raj said this early involvement in farm work helped instill in her strong values of hard work, responsibility and perseverance.
This helped ease the challenges she faced throughout her educational and professional journey.
“One of the most demanding aspects I faced was managing my time effectively as a teacher while pursuing my studies.
“After a full day of teaching, I would return home to fulfill my responsibilities, which included cooking and preparing for my evening classes. This rigorous schedule often extended late into the night, sometimes beyond 9pm.”
Ms Raj often had to prioritise her studies over family time. This was difficult because she deeply valued her relationships.
“Balancing work, studies and home life required immense dedication and resilience as well as the ability to adapt to relentless pace and pressure. But despite these challenges, I learned valuable lessons in time management and perseverance.”
Each experience strengthened her commitment to her pursuits and underscored the importance of having family support
Ms Raj’s goal is to specialise in counselling and support individuals and families as they navigate life’s challenges.
“I aim to focus on areas like mental health, trauma recovery and personal growth, while leading community programs and workshops to promote resilience and well-being.
“My dream also includes raising awareness of mental health and advocating for improved support systems.
Her message to others is to embrace every opportunity to learn and grow, without fear.
“Challenges will arise but viewing them as opportunities for growth will strengthen your resolve.
“Surround yourself with supportive individuals who encourage you and provide mentorship as you navigate your journey.
“And celebrate your achievements, no matter how small, and remain open to new experiences.”
