FIJI’S pioneering shark dive operator Aqua-Trek has emerged as a global benchmark for sustainable tourism.

Celebrating its 36-year anniversary at the Pearl Resort in Pacific Harbour, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka commended the company’s innovative approach that extended far beyond adventure tourism.

“One thing that we aim to do here is develop more tourism products, not just beds and airline seats,” Mr Gavoka said.

“When we welcome visitors, we want to ensure they experience some of our natural wonders, spend in communities, and support our local economy.”

Founded in 1989, Aqua-Trek has played a leading role in establishing marine protected areas such as Shark Reef and Lake Reef in collaboration with the Government and local communities.

These sanctuaries have helped preserve critical habitats for sharks and other marine life, fostering biodiversity while positioning Fiji as a model of eco-conscious tourism.

“This pioneering commitment to marine conservation has not only preserved biodiversity but has also advanced research and education in marine sciences.”

Mr Gavoka praised the company for showing how tourism could be harmonised with conservation efforts to safeguard Fiji’s pristine environment for future generations.

Aqua-Trek also contributes a portion of its revenue to nearby villages, supporting education and community development initiatives.

This integration of economic upliftment with environmental goals reflects the ethos of Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework, which promotes inclusive growth and shared prosperity.

Over the years, Aqua-Trek has expanded its offerings to include soft coral and wreck diving, as well as PADI-certified training programs, maintaining its appeal to both thrill-seekers and marine conservationists.

“Innovation has been at the heart of Aqua-Trek’s success.”
