A 24-MEMBER delegation will embark on a business mission to Fiji’s largest export market in the Pacific region – Tonga to further explore ways to strengthen the two island nations’ long-standing trade and investment links.
Last year, Fiji exported $161.8 million worth of goods to the island kingdom.
The top exports to Tonga in 2024 were flour, biscuits, paints and varnishes, and eggs.
There is also high growth potential for biscuits, building materials, fresh and frozen seafood, canned food and ready-made drinks.
According to Investment Fiji, there were also opportunities for Fiji to increase its export share in Tonga’s market, with a significant untapped potential for Fijian sugar.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica will lead the delegation that will comprise government officials and self-funded private sector organisations.
“The delegation is keen to work on maintaining bilateral trade and investment opportunities,” Mr Kamikamica said.
Investment Fiji chief executive officer Kamal Chetty said investors from Tonga had registered projects in Fiji in the transport and services sector.
“Additionally, through the mission, we aim to facilitate qualified trade and investment leads across sectors such as tourism, infrastructure, services, and FMCGs (fast-moving consumer goods), and capture potential business opportunities,” Mr Chetty said.
“The Tonga Business Mission 2025 represents a pivotal opportunity for Fiji to strengthen its economic engagement with our Pacific neighbours.
“We aim to also create strong networks and ultimately enhance the capabilities of our exports.”
The Tonga Business Mission 2025, facilitated by Investment Fiji and the Ministry of Trade, will be held from May5-8.
Private-sector companies attending the mission include Punjas, Goodman Fielder, Tropik Woods, Ashabhai, Paradise Technologies, Vinod Patel, Rooster Poultry, Juice Fiji, Food Processors Limited and Propharma Pte Limited.
