THE Fiji Police Force’s traffic control division issued $3million worth of traffic Infringements Notices (TINs) in 2021, its 2021 annual report that was tabled in Parliament on Monday says.
A massive 40,080 TINs worth $1m were issued for speeding, $125,000 for seatbelt offences, 2373 for careless driving, $116,400 issued for drunk driving, and $1.3m for other offences.
“As a result of enforcement duties, the traffic control division intercepted 289,498 vehicles, conducted 8577 school patrols, conducted 18,333 operation duties and facilitated 161,801 awareness activities,” states the report.
“The directorate found that every year the main cause of fatality is speeding.
Increasing its number of speed detectors could significantly make an impact on road fatalities in the future.”
“Currently the department has 29 speed detectors.
“Furthermore, establishing traffic units will improve command and control on the frontline.”
The Traffic Control Division recorded 36 fatalities from August 2020 to July 2021 compared to 52 in the same period in 2019-2020
