AFTER 12 years, New Caledonia returned to the international tennis scene with 13-year-old Heata Nui Ista Toofa leading the way.
She competed at the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships (POJC) and two rounds of the ITF Junior Circuit.
In her debut at the POJC, Heata finished second in the doubles competition, falling to American Samoa in two straight sets. At the ITF Junior Circuit, she faced tough opponents, including the number one seed from Australia in the first round and the number eight seed in the second round.
She lost both matches but said the experience was a huge learning opportunity. She also praised the Fijian hospitality during her stay. Heata only started competing in tournaments at the age of 11, which she admits was quite late compared to other players.
Despite that, she has already climbed the ranks to a 15/5 rating in just a year and a half. Losing her first match did not discourage her instead, it fuelled her determination and love for the sport.
She believes her fast progress comes from hard work, several hours of training each week, and strong support from her coaches Richard Pugibet and Gil Fessard. Both have been guiding her journey, along with the full support of her parents. Heata knows the journey requires a lot of resources, and she is grateful for everyone who believes in her. Her dream is to travel the world and become a professional player.
