One of the most harmful invasive agricultural pests, the Fall Armyworm has been detected in Fiji.
The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) states this pest poses a significant risk to Fiji’s food security and economy due to its preference for crops such as maize, rice, sugarcane, and vegetables.
BAF said the Fall Armyworm was found on April 23 on a maize farm in Uciwai, Nadi.
BAF has immediately activated its Plant Pest Emergency Response Plan to contain and manage the outbreak.
BAF urges all farmers and stakeholders to be vigilant and report any suspected signs of Fall Armyworm immediately.
Suspected sightings should be reported to the BAF hotline on 5984, or the nearest BAF, or the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways Office.
