Marist Brothers High School (MBHS) and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School successfully defended their titles at the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Fiji Finals, claiming the boys’ and girls’ divisions respectively in dominant fashion.
Marist emerged victorious in the boys’ division, collecting 12 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Suva Grammar School finished second with 7 gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze, while Queen Victoria School claimed third with 6 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals.
MBHS head coach Antonio Rabuiliku credited the team’s strategic pivot to field events as a key factor in their successful title defence.
“We knew it was going to be haywire on the tracks, so we focused our attention on the field,” Rabuiliku said. “The plan was to lead, and we did it in the end.”
In the girls’ division, MGM proved unstoppable, amassing a commanding 20 gold, 8 silver, and 5 bronze medals. Adi Cakobau School (ACS) came in second with 6 gold, 9 silver, and 8 bronze medals, while Natabua High School took third with 6 gold, 1 silver, and 7 bronze.
MGM head coach Waliki Satakala expressed his pride in the team’s back-to-back titles, calling the achievement a “first-time feeling” for the Nabua-based school.
“I’d like to thank everyone for this special moment. Many schools have done it before us, but for us to defend our title for the second year is truly special,” he said.
The overall Best Male Athlete award went to Kirikiti Biu of Marist Brothers High School, while MGM’s Gladness Simpson was named Best Female Athlete, capping off a remarkable weekend for both schools.
