Indonesia has provided $12 million (US$6 million) grant to the Fijian government.
The money will be used to address Fiji’s national debt.
“We greatly appreciate the grant valued at FJ$12 million, or equal to US$6 million,” Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated in the joint press statement with President Prabowo Subianto after their bilateral meeting at the Merdeka Palace on Thursday.
“We are no longer burdened by our debts, and we express our utmost gratitude to you and your government.”
Mr Rabuka emphasized Indonesia’s role as a trusted partner and friend of Fiji since 1974 and commended President Prabowo for the warm welcome extended to him and his delegation.
Meanwhile, President Prabowo expressed his honor in hosting PM Rabuka and his delegates for a state visit to the Merdeka Palace.
“I am a bit confused because the last time we met, you had a large moustache,” Prabowo remarked humorously, prompting laughter from Mr Rabuka and his delegates.
Prabowo highlighted the Fijian PM’s inaugural visit to Indonesia as symbolic of robust bilateral ties spanning over 50 years.
He noted that Fiji has emerged as a key partner for Indonesia in the Pacific, highlighting their shared archipelagic identity and alignment in strategic priorities and regional challenges.
