Stop dumping rubbish at the Naitonitoni Jetty in Navua!

Residents living near the Naitonitoni Jetty in Navua are calling for urgent action to stop the illegal dumping of rubbish in the area, after a growing pile of waste was discovered near government quarters on Thursday.

The issue gained attention after a concerned local shared a photo of the dumping site on social media, prompting outrage and concern from the Navua community.

Many have described the scene as an eyesore and a recurring problem that continues to plague the area.

A local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told this newspaper that this kind of dumping has been happening for years, usually during the early hours of the morning or late at night to avoid detection.

“People need to take responsibility for their rubbish. I don’t know why anyone would want to dump their rubbish there, but it’s wrong.

“It looks unsightly, especially for us gang who do our morning walks around here.”

The resident said the pile of rubbish not only spoils the environment but also attracts stray dogs, creating safety concerns for those walking in the area at night.

“A lot of people come here to swim.

“It’s unsafe and unhygienic. I think the health department should do a check on the people whose rubbish isn’t being collected. Then we’ll know who the culprits are.”

“We can’t always blame the government services (rubbish collection), it’s the people doing this. People need to be more educated and considerate of others.”

Locals are now urging authorities to take stronger action, including increased surveillance and public awareness, to curb illegal dumping and protect the popular site.
