The Fiji Sports Council is excited to announce the first leg of the 2025 Grassroots Fiji Under-21 7s Tournament, starting in Wairiki Village, Bua, on April 25-26.

This tournament aims to discover hidden rugby talents in Fiji’s grassroots communities, beginning in the Northern Division.

Both men’s and women’s teams can register for a fee of $350.

The cash prizes are:

  • Winners of $3500;
  •  Runners-up $2000;
  •  Semi-finalists $750;
  •  Plate winners $1000; and
  •  Bowl winners $500.

There will be an open grade volleyball tournament for men and women included in the event.

According to Emosi Lasaqa, Fiji Sports Council communications officer, the tournament expects a minimum of 16 men’s teams and eight women’s teams to participate, showcasing the passion and skill of young players in Fiji.

“The Grassroots Fiji 7s program, launched last year, has already proven its value. From the inaugural five legs series, a select group of young players were identified and later represented the program on an international tour to the Hamilton 7s in New Zealand in February this year,” said Lasaqa.

“The council remains committed to expanding opportunities for youth from every corner of the country, including remote and maritime communities.”

This year, the tournament will reach deeper into the grassroots than ever before, with legs planned for places as far as Naroi in Moala and Kadavu.

“The inclusion of these locations underscores our mission to empower rural communities and provide equal opportunities for all aspiring rugby athletes.

“Teams in Bua and across the Northern Division are reminded that the deadline to register for the opening leg is the 17th of this month.

“We call on all young rugby players, community leaders, and stakeholders in the North to take full advantage of this opportunity.”
