Deputy Opposition leader Parveen Bala is calling on the Government to wake up and address the issue of litter and its impact on the dengue fever outbreak in the Western Division.

He said this while expressing his concerns over the recent death of a Ba student from the disease.

He said the Government should be looking at increasing its clean-up campaigns to control the spread of dengue fever caused by mosquitoes.

“When they declared a dengue outbreak in the Western Division, what were the plans that they had?”

“During our term, whenever there was a dengue outbreak, we used to spray. We used to have clean-up campaigns.

“Where are all these things?”

He also pointed out how piles of rubbish were a common site in many urban centres across the country.

“You go and see in towns, there is rubbish piled in any street you go.

“Along our highways, there’s rubbish along roadsides, in mangrove areas, in waterways.

“There’s rubbish everywhere and no plans for a countrywide clean-up, monitoring and enforcement.

“So I urge the Ministry of Health, especially those in charge in the Western Division, to wake up.”

The Ministry of Health confirmed about 5128 dengue fever cases were recorded between January 1 and March 23.
