BUS services for students and schools participating in the athletics zone meets and the Fiji Finals could be grounded if students do not stop their unruly behaviour while on buses.
Following another viral video of students in Nadi misbehaving in a bus earlier this week, concerns have been raised with Land Transport Authority (LTA) which has been in talks with bus companies to stop services if this behaviour continued.
“This was raised by the bus companies last year and we have time and again raised their concerns with schools, students and parents,” said LTA chief executive officer Irimaia Rokosawa.
“We urgently advise school students, teachers and parents to ensure that we behave in a manner that is conducive to advocating road safety. The students’ behaviour that we saw on social media will not be condoned.
“We are advising students that behave in such manner to be courteous and be mindful not only of other students but other members of the public including the bus driver.”
He said the safety and the life of the bus driver was often not considered.
“He is outnumbered in a way and cannot manage such behaviour from students.
“Something that we had discussed last year was a strategy which we will be replicating this year and that was a meeting with competition organisers, games sponsors and Ministry of Education to discuss road safety.
“We are discussing with bus companies to refrain from servicing schools from which students behave in such manner.
“That is the extreme measure that we can take because despite the fact that we have done school visitations and community awareness, students seem to keep behaving in a manner that does not promote road safety.”
