THE highly anticipated AA Spares Fiji Amateur Championship tees off this weekend at Denarau, with a new winner set to be crowned following the departure of defending champion Abid Hussein, who turned professional last year.

Among the favorites for the title are Shakeell Pillay, Australian-based Adish Kumar, and Ba School teacher Asish Chand.

The tournament is a world-ranking event, with any player scoring 6 over par or better over 54 holes earning a ranking.

Currently, Adish Kumar is the only ranked player in the field, though his Australian citizenship means he won’t be eligible for the Fiji-based rankings. A total of 50 players have registered, including five ladies.

Golf Fiji is also offering free entry to juniors to encourage their participation and development in the sport.

Golf Fiji President Amitesh Chandra expressed gratitude towards the continued support from their major sponsor, AA Spares, for the second consecutive year.

“We are thankful to Salen Naidu and AA Spares for their ongoing commitment to golf, especially for their support in developing young talent,” Chandra said.

“Their backing ensures that we continue to see growth and opportunity in the sport.”

The championship will tee off at 7am on Saturday.
