THE Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team is heading into the Hong Kong Sevens this weekend with a renewed sense of motivation and unity, driven by their unwavering faith and passion for the game.

Head coach Richard Walker has been deeply moved by the team’s spirit, particularly their heartfelt prayers and harmonious singing, which have reinforced his belief in their potential.

“When I come into this environment and see how much their faith means to them, it’s just powerful. The way they pray, the way they sing, it’s like the most beautiful voices in the world. And that’s how I want them to play, like they’re singing their songs,” Walker shared.

“It’s amazing to witness, and it truly motivates me as a coach.”

As the team prepares for the competition, Walker stressed the key areas they have been working on to refine their gameplay.

“One of our main focuses has been our connection on defense and making sure we secure the ruck area. At times, we tend to move too quickly, and opponents capitalise on that by implementing a blitz defense. We need to be more direct in our attack at the start, which will allow us to create space and play our natural Fijian style of rugby.”

With the team making it to the final in the Vancouver Sevens, the new head coach is keen on maintaining and elevating their performance.

His strategy involves engaging with senior players, particularly those who competed in the Tokyo Olympics, to bring back the successful elements from that campaign.

With faith, determination, and the Fijian spirit running through their veins, the Fijiana 7s team is ready to take on the challenge in Hong Kong and make their nation proud.

The three-day tournament begins this Friday.
