The decommissioned Navy ship RFNS Lautoka is to be sunk out sea, Fiji Navy has announced.

In a social media post, Fiji Navy said RFNS Lautoka has departed the Navy base and Suva Harbour for the last time.

It was towed by RFNS Timo to be scuttled.

In naval vernacular, scuttle refers to a breach where a ship’s hull is breached to sink the vessel deliberately.

“Commissioned into the Fiji Navy in October 1987, the RFNS Lautoka served Fiji well for 37 years, undertaking a wide variety of tasks ranging from Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) to various maritime operations,” said Fiji Navy.

“We are grateful for its dedicated service and for all those who served onboard over the years.”
