EASING traffic congestion is part of the development plan for Lautoka, says council CEO Mohammed Anees Khan.
He told the Lautoka Special School of Education last week many developments were taking place between Nadi and Lautoka.
“And in parallel we need the city to grow, catering to the demand and growth of the nation,” he said.
“The Government has a 50-year master plan for the growth of the country, centered around the Suva to Nausori corridor and the Nadi to Lautoka corridor.
“A lot of it is urbanised growth in which we see Nadi and Lautoka growing into a large municipality.”
Mr Khan said while 50 years was a lot of time, “we need to put in things right now, so that we can see where we are going”.
“If you drive around Lautoka you can see digital parking meters and this is one of the examples that we’ve set as a platform for growth.
“Lautoka not only needs to match Suva as the largest city in the country, but we could also learn from other countries.
“We have planned to develop the city in phases, to cover Vuda to Lovu at least.”
