THE second athletics trial for the Pacific Mini Games in Palau saw a strong turnout last Saturday at HFC Bank Stadium, with over 100 athletes from schools and clubs across Fiji participating.
The event provided a platform for national hopefuls to chase qualification while also serving as a crucial build-up for high school athletes preparing for their respective zone competitions.
Team Fiji hurdles athlete Errol Bernard Qaqa, who was also helping officiate at the event was impressed with the increased participation.
“The biggest improvement is the turnout. Compared to the first trial, we’ve seen more athletes and a lot of high school students pushing their limits,” he said.
Western-based athletes made their presence felt, with representatives from Nadi and Lautoka delivering promising performances.
“It’s great to see kids from the West here. Some are very close to qualifying, not just for their zones but also for the Mini Games,” Qaqa added.
Nationally recognised athletes, including Fiji secondary school sprint queen Helena Young in the women’s open sprints led the charge, while several high school prospects showed they are capable of competing at the highest level.
Athletics Fiji officials also noted improvements in 100metres times, jumps and throws.
The next trial will be held during the Easter Games, which is expected to draw even more participants.
