METHODIST churches across Fiji gathered yesterday to celebrate Fathers Day.

For Methodists, this is an annual event held on the second Sunday of March to honour fathers past, present, and future.

Speaking about the occasion, general secretary of the Methodist Church in Fiji, Reverend Dr Jolami Lasawa, said the day also marked Harvest Sunday, making it a time of thanksgiving.

“It is a special Sunday where we celebrate fathers — those who have passed, those who are with us today, and the fathers of the future,” Dr Lasawa said.

“We also use this Sunday to acknowledge God as our Creator, the source of our life and blessings.

“Traditionally, the harvest from the year is brought to church as an offering of gratitude.”

The celebration also recognised the 190th anniversary of the Methodist Church’s presence in Fiji since its establishment in 1835.

Dr Lasawa emphasised the important role of fathers in the family, church, and society stating they were honoured through prayers and thanksgiving.

“Fathers led the services throughout the day, both in the morning and evening, as part of this special occasion.”

Also celebrating the occasion yesterday at the Nasareci Methodist Church in Nadi, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka used the opportunity to emphasise the important role parents played in a family.

“As parents, we must set the right example for our children,” said Mr Rabuka.

“If there is no food, find food. If they need guidance, be there to teach them. Everything a child does begins at home and it is our responsibility to lead them in the right direction.

“Our war against crime and drugs and other social issues must start from home.”
