TEACHERS need to make reading enjoyable, says Education Ministry’s director Curriculum Advisory Services Iowane Tiko as he opened the World Book Day celebrations at Delainamasi Government School yesterday.
Mr Tiko said children had mastered how to use gadgets at home thus the need to make reading enjoyable in schools.
He has also reminded teachers not to hesitate in using technology for reading in the classroom.
“What is challenging is that we’re coming in with a different generation, far different from when I went to school. This younger generation have already mastered the games in the iPads and mobile phones at home,” Mr Tiko said.
“If we’re honest with ourselves this morning (yesterday), you will agree with me that the masters of those pieces of technologies are sitting right here in front of us and this makes me very proud to encourage our teachers not to hesitate to use technology in reading.”
He said when students did not learn to read, they would not be able to understand.
“There will come a time when our teachers will need to be convinced to make reading much more enjoyable at the school level from years One to Four.”
