WORK on the upgrading of the Nadi bus stand is expected to start before the end of this month, says Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa.

He told Parliament this week the work should be completed before the end of this financial year at a cost of $150,000.

Mr Nalumisa also said the Lautoka swimming pool was expected to be completed before the end of the 2025-2026 financial year while phase two of Ba’s Govind Park project would be completed before the start of the next financial year.

“These facilities are critical for hosting local sporting events and generating revenue,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“The Lautoka City Council is also upgrading the bus stand which will be completed in the next financial year whilst the public convenience at the bus stand has been upgraded.”

Mr Nalumisa said work on the Rakiraki market upgrade was currently in the tender process.

He said while the Government did not create those problems “we are the Government that is taking responsibility and fixing them”.

“We have initiated a comprehensive review of the Local Government Act to restore decision-making powers to municipal councils, ensuring they can operate with greater efficiency and accountability.

“We are modernising town planning regulations, upgrading critical infrastructure and introducing public-private partnerships to bring much-needed investment into municipal projects.”
